Southern Moonshine Egg Nog

Here's a festive recipe that’ll make your holiday gatherings a hoot:

Ingredients:

6 large eggs

1 cup granulated sugar

2 cups whole milk

1 cup heavy cream

1 cup moonshine (adjust to taste) or substitute Mountain Dew for Children

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg (plus more for garnish)

1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon

Whipped cream (for topping)

Instructions:

Separate the Eggs: In two large bowls, separate the egg yolks from the egg whites.

Beat the Yolks: Whisk the egg yolks together with the sugar until the mixture becomes thick and pale.

Heat the Milk and Cream: In a saucepan over medium heat, combine the milk, heavy cream, nutmeg, and cinnamon. Stir frequently until the mixture is hot, but not boiling.

Temper the Yolks: Slowly add a ladle of the hot milk mixture to the egg yolks, whisking continuously to prevent the eggs from curdling. Gradually whisk in the remaining hot milk mixture.

Combine and Cook: Pour the tempered yolk mixture back into the saucepan. Cook over medium heat, stirring constantly until the mixture thickens slightly and coats the back of a spoon (about 5-7 minutes). Do not let it boil.

Add Moonshine or Mountain Dew (for Children) and Vanilla: Remove the saucepan from heat and stir in the moonshine and vanilla extract. Let the mixture cool.

Beat the Egg Whites: In a separate bowl, beat the egg whites until soft peaks form. Gently fold the beaten egg whites into the cooled egg nog mixture for a fluffy texture.

Chill and Serve: Refrigerate the egg nog for at least 2 hours before serving. When ready to serve, give it a good stir. Pour into glasses, top with whipped cream, and sprinkle with a dash of nutmeg.
